SACT Programme for Education and Training

Background

The Systemic Anti Cancer Therapy (SACT) Education and Training Programme has been developed in response to the recommendation in many national documents (DoH, 2004; DoH 2008; DoH, 2009) for a network–agreed approach to education and training for all staff administering cytotoxic drugs.

Traditionally, each different staff group involved with the preparation of SACT and treatment/care of patients receiving SACT has developed their own, discipline-specific and Trust-specific education packages. The SACT Education & Training project has brought all of these packages together into one generic programme for the whole of the Greater Midlands Cancer Network (GMCN). This will enable members of all relevant staff groups, within each Trust across the GMCN, to receive an equitable standard of education and training and develop skills relevant to their individual responsibilities and the specific roles they perform.

Aims and Objectives

Aspects of SACT training are applicable to the multidisciplinary team and practitioners from all disciplines caring for and coming into contact with patients receiving SACT. These practitioners need to achieve competence under supervision, in both the theory and practice, relating to SACT, relevant to their specific role.

A team of clinical and educational experts from Trusts and Universities within the Greater Midlands Cancer Network (GMCN) and material from existing work books/training packages from Trusts and Cancer Networks from around the UK have been used to develop the SACT Education & Training Programme.

The SACT Education and Training Programme will enable the delivery of standardised training in a planned and stepped approach, assisting the healthcare worker to achieve competence under supervision at each level prior to moving forward. This will be delivered within a career framework that clearly defines the scope of practice at each level and encourages and supports staff development.
